Safety, Red Flags and Who I Work With in Stockport & South Manchester

If you live in Stockport or South Manchester and are thinking about home‑visit physiotherapy, it’s important to know when it’s the right option – and when you actually need urgent medical help instead.

In this post I’ll explain:

  • The types of problems I help with at home

  • Situations where home MSK physio is not appropriate

  • Important “red flag” symptoms that need urgent attention

  • How I keep you safe by working within clear professional boundaries

Who I Work With

I provide home‑visit musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy for adults in Stockport and South Manchester. My focus is on helping you manage joint, muscle and back/neck problems in the comfort of your own home, without the stress of travel or waiting rooms.

Typical problems I help with include:

  • Back and neck pain that changes with movement or position

  • Shoulder, knee, hip, ankle and other joint pains

  • Muscle and tendon problems (sprains, strains, tendinopathy, overuse)

  • Postural and work‑related pain (e.g. office or manual jobs)

  • Rehabilitation after fractures or injuries once acute care is complete

  • Recovery after joint surgery (such as hip, knee or shoulder procedures) when your surgeon or GP is happy for you to start physio

Home‑based physio is ideal if you:

  • Struggle to get to a clinic

  • Prefer to exercise and rehab in your own space

  • Want 1:1, unhurried sessions focused on your goals

When Home MSK Physio Is Not Right

For your safety, there are some situations where home‑based MSK physiotherapy is not appropriate and you should seek urgent medical advice instead.

I am not the right service if you:

  • Have had a recent significant accident (such as a fall from height or road traffic collision) and have not been medically assessed

  • Cannot put weight through a limb after an injury, or have a clear deformity or suspected fracture

  • Feel generally unwell with fever, night sweats or unexplained weight loss alongside new pain

  • Have a hot, red, very swollen joint and feel unwell (possible infection)

  • Have complex medical problems that are not yet fully investigated or are unstable

In these cases, please contact your GP, NHS 111 or attend A&E as appropriate before considering physiotherapy.

Important Warning Signs (Red Flags)

During enquiries and your first appointment I will always check for “red flag” symptoms that could suggest something more serious than a routine MSK problem.

Please seek urgent medical help (999, A&E or same‑day GP/111 as appropriate) and do not book physio first if you notice:

Possible Cauda Equina / Serious Spinal Problem

  • New difficulties controlling your bladder or bowels, or not feeling when you need to go

  • Numbness around your genitals, anus or inner thighs (the “saddle” area)

  • Severe back pain with rapidly worsening leg weakness or problems walking

Possible Cancer, Infection or Systemic Illness

  • Unexplained weight loss, fevers or night sweats

  • Night pain that does not ease with rest or position changes

  • Pain that feels non‑mechanical (not clearly linked to movement or posture)

  • A history of cancer, IV drug use or significant immune suppression with new pain

Possible Fracture or Serious Joint Problem

  • Significant trauma (e.g. fall from height, impact, road traffic collision) with severe pain

  • Inability to weight‑bear after an injury, or clear deformity

  • A hot, red, very painful joint plus feeling generally unwell

Other Serious Medical Issues

  • Sudden chest pain or shortness of breath

  • Signs of stroke (face, arm, speech changes)

  • Any situation where you feel unsafe at home or there are safeguarding concerns

If I ever identify these signs during a session, I will stop treatment and support you to access urgent medical care instead of continuing physiotherapy.

How I Keep You Safe

I take safety and professional standards seriously. That means:

  • I am HCPC‑registered and work within current UK physiotherapy guidance.

  • I only treat problems that are suitable for home‑based MSK physio.

  • I always screen for red flags and will not continue if I am concerned about something more serious.

  • I keep clear, secure clinical notes and can (with your consent) communicate with your GP or other healthcare professionals when needed.

My promise is simple:

I will always work within safe professional guidelines, and I will never “just treat” when I believe you need a different service.

If your problem is suitable for home‑based MSK physio, we’ll agree a clear plan and work on it together. If I feel your symptoms may indicate something more serious, I will explain my concerns, pause physiotherapy and advise the most appropriate next step (GP, NHS 111, A&E or other specialist).

Not Sure If I’m the Right Person?

If you’re in or around Stockport and South Manchester and are unsure whether your problem is suitable for home‑visit physiotherapy, you can get in touch and briefly describe your symptoms. I’ll let you know whether:

  • Home‑based MSK physio is likely to be appropriate, or

  • You should speak to your GP, NHS 111 or another service first.

You won’t be pressured into booking an appointment if I don’t think I’m the right person to help.
