The Rise of “Tech Neck”
We’ve all seen the headlines: phones are destroying your posture. With more people working remotely or scrolling for hours, the term “tech neck” has become common. It describes neck stiffness or discomfort linked to prolonged phone or laptop use.
But here’s the truth — poor posture alone doesn’t cause pain.
What the Research Says
Recent studies have shown a weak link between posture and pain. Some people with “perfect” posture still experience neck pain, while others with a slouched position have none at all. Pain is complex — influenced by movement habits, stress, sleep, and overall activity levels.
Why Movement Matters More Than Posture
Instead of chasing the “perfect” posture, focus on moving regularly throughout the day. Your neck is designed to move — flex, extend, rotate, and bend. Prolonged stillness (in any position) is often what leads to stiffness.
Quick tip: every 30–45 minutes, gently roll your shoulders, stretch your neck, and change your sitting or standing position.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
A physiotherapist can assess your neck movement, reduce stiffness, and guide you through exercises that build strength and restore full range of motion. At Williamson Physiotherapy, we take a movement-first approach — helping you move better, feel stronger, and live fuller.
If you’ve been struggling with neck tension or stiffness, don’t wait it out. Book your assessment and start easing that tech-related tension.
